They've been dressed up as geisha girls, surfer girls and even pieces of sushi over the years. They may not understand the tradition, but "pugs understand positive energy," explains dog owner, partner and costume designer Lisa Woodruff of Huntington Beach.
Ten years ago, it was hard to find a Halloween costume for a cat, dog or duck. Today they are everywhere, from the dollar stores to Beverly Hills boutiques. Online or off, there are costumes galore.
A little bling or properly draped scrap of fabric can transform your pet into almost any animal, character or celebrity, says Steve Major of All the Same Wild and Tame, an animal sanctuary that sells pet accessories in Sherman Oaks.
The most popular ready-made pet costumes this year are Superdog, bee, jockey rider, hot dog, pirate, devil, prisoner, Yoda, cowboy rider, Batman and groom, according to public relations manager Lori Samsoucie of Wisconsin-based buyseasons.com, the largest online costume retailer in the country.
But the most unusual, most creative costumes -- the ones that will win contests -- are designed in the imaginations of pet owners, Woodruff says.
Olive and Mochi, stepsisters who are both 5, already have their outfits for the ninth annual Haute Dog Howl'oween Parade and Costume Contest on Oct. 31. The Long Beach event is the largest pet costume contest in the country, according to organizer Justin Rudd.

Nearly four thousand fans turned out Sunday to watch the surf dogs of San Diego hit the beach for 'the world's largest dog surfing event'.
The shore was packed with a couple hundred dogs and a couple thousand people, said an event organizer from the Helen Woodward Animal Center, a local animal shelter. The dogs and their owners began surfing shortly after 9 a.m. at the 4th annual Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon. The surfers rode waves at North Beach, aka Dog Beach, in Del Mar.
It wasn't all about the waves, though. Some pets picked up "pointers from the pros on a beachside agility course," as organizers put it, while still other canines were dressed up for a costume contest.
Surfer, judge and animal centre board Chairman Bryce Rhodes said that while all the dogs have a great time, about 20 per cent fall into the upper echelon of athletes that the dog surfing community calls 'pros'.
Mr Rhodes, who is also the grandson of the late Helen Woodward, said the center's founder would have been delighted to see the Surf-A-Thon.
'Our long-term goal is to put ourselves out of business - to see an end to the euthanisation of animals,' he said.

Events Reads: 1869
A Pug in Oregon has become an Internet sensation after a video of her pushing a stroller hit the Web.
Jenny, a pug from Portland, is be seen standing on her hind legs pushing a stroller past city landmarks in Portland. Mark and Ellen Zessin, Jenny's owners, made the video for their son who's studying in Florida. It has ended up on the Internet and become a huge hit.
"People started saying, you know, this is a viral video, it's just gone viral. We weren't quite sure what that meant. Is that a bad thing?" said Ellen Zessin.
"Jenny is very rambunctious and I thought we needed to channel that energy,” she added. “[Jenny will] push [the stroller] anywhere. She loves to do it."
"We had a good time just watching some of the reactions of people,” said Mark Zessin.
"We've had people from all over the world that have sent us just absolutely wonderful messages," Ellen Zessin said.
As with most recent Internet fads, a talent scout has called the Zessins in hopes of finding a TV role for Jenny.

Yogi The Pug Visits Classroom

A famous dog and his tongue stopped by for a visit at Greenview Knolls Elementary School last week.
Yogi the Pug, made famous by an always-visible long tongue, and his owner, Kevin Donahue, joined a holiday party last week at Lori Ennis' second-grade class at Greenview Knolls Elementary School. Yogi has become an Internet phenomenon thanks to hundreds of thousands of views of a short video clip posted on YouTube showing the dog waking up with his tongue lazily hanging out.
"With the presence of reconnecting Web sites like Facebook and Classmates.com, etc, I stumbled upon a boy I had a huge crush on 20 years ago in high school," Ennis said. As it happened, Donahue still lives in the Washington, D.C., region and, to her surprise, is owner to the celebrity Yogi the Pug.
"I've met so many people, even my best friend from age 5," Ennis said. She said it was great reconnecting with Donahue.
Although she said she is now happily married to a Marine Corps major who is a pilot, Ennis said reconnecting with the crush from 20 years ago opened up a nice opportunity for her students to see the famous dog.
After contacting Donahue via the Internet, he offered to bring Yogi for a visit to her second-grade class at Greenview Knolls Elementary School, Ennis said.

"How much is that doggie in the window?" Fortunately, there will be no doggies for sale at Pugstock. The Western New York Pugs Group, which sponsors the event, hopes you'll consider adoption before shelling out your cash for those in captivity, hence this fundraiser for pug and puppy-mill rescue groups. Consider that adopted pugs still come with all the wrinkles, curlicue tail, snorting and yipping common to the breed.
Bring your pug - or your desire to be owned by one - on Sunday, September 14, to Powder Mills Park. From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. you can find out everything you ever wanted to know about the breed, and purchase everything you can imagine befitting the small dog. Call 615-2557 or visit wnypugs.org for more info.

SEPRA Holds Shopping Fundraiser on March 1 at Precious Pets
Events Reads: 1749
Press Release from SEPRA:
There is an email titled “screen cleaner” that is being forwarded faster than a speeding bullet. It features a pug dog licking a computer screen from the inside. The popularity of this email confirms the popularity of this breed, which is one reason that the Southeast Pug Rescue & Adoption, Inc. (SEPRA) is holding a shopping fundraiser on Saturday, March 1, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., at the Precious Pets boutique, located at 9 South Peachtree St., in Historic Norcross.
Fundraising takes place three ways. First, because SEPRA volunteers work in the store helping to sell product and greet customers, Precious Pets gives SEPRA 20% of the total sales before taxes for the day worked. In addition, shoppers can buy items provided by SEPRA with the organization’s name and logo on them, such as PugFest t-shirts, mouse pads, static clings and bumper stickers, with all proceeds from those sales going to SEPRA. Lastly, people can drop dollar bills and loose change into SEPRA’s donation jar.
In addition to raising money for the care of rescued pugs and pug mixes alike, the fundraiser gives shoppers a chance to learn about the breed and the pugs’ personalities and traits. SEPRA will have a few foster pugs on site for learning (but NOT adoption, because SEPRA requires applications and rigorous home checks first), and people can learn how to become foster or adoptive parents and how to volunteer for other fundraisers.

Spike and Daphne: Two Pugs On Their Way To Westminster
On Feb. 11 and 12, Spike (4 years old) and Daphne (20 months) will join 2,627 dogs, 122 from Connecticut, at the 132nd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show at Madison Square Garden. Among the competitors will be a total of 37 pugs.
Only champion dogs can enter Westminster. They become champions by winning the required number of points at other dog shows.
“I was lucky,”Ashley Fischer of Ridgefield Road, the owner, said. “There are many more dogs than places and so there’s a lottery and I won for both dogs.”
This is Spike’s last hurrah. He’s about to retire as a show dog and just take it easy.
“Spike is a cool dog,” Ms. Fischer said. “He loves to be trained, he’s a wonderful student, so I have to find something else for him to do after he retires, maybe a therapy dog. The few times he’s been in a nursing home, they love him!”
Spike is not only a champion, a winner at many dog shows, he is the 14th best dog of his breed in the country. He’s been at Westminster four times. This is Daphne’s debut and Ms. Fischer plans to get her used to the size of the Garden, the noise, the crowds, the lights, beforehand.
Pugs were bred in China 2,500 years ago as companion dogs. Both Spike and Daphne fulfill all the required standards for the breed: square body, round head, curly tail and the proper configuration of face and head wrinkles. The shoulder angle should match the angle of the hind quarters and they should have a nice, wide under jaw.
